Whether you are using banner ads or creating your own HTML ads for your WordPress site, you can spend an inordinate amount of time finding just the right spot.
You test it. Maybe you even use a software with a heatmap that shows where people are clicking. You might try it at the beginning of the post, the end of the post or in the middle somewhere. It might be in your header, footer, sidebar or some other widget area on your site.
But figuring all this out can be exhausting. For example, look at the placement options I have with the plugin I use on BobWP, Advanced Ads Pro .

I am constantly testing this stuff. And I’ve discovered where ads might or might not work. It’s rarely straightforward though. You may be paying so much attention to where that ad shows up that you but are you getting deeper inside the head of the visitor, like thinking about why or how they landed on that particular page or post? It was likely because they needed an answer. A real solution. You provided them the content they were looking for.
So if they are reading about a healthy snack solution for their cat, the ad about flea medicine probably isn’t at the top of their minds. Or perhaps, they are reading a post on traveling to Europe and you are trying to sell them hosting for their website. Or maybe in the case of a site like mine, they reading about a contact form plugin, and you show them an ad for a gallery plugin.
What are the chances they will suddenly think:
Wow, I’ve been so frustrated trying to find a healthy snack for my cat. Maybe I should consider buying this medicine for fleas, which they don’t have.
I can’t wait to see the vineyards in Italy, but I suddenly have this desire to change my web host.
I wonder if this contact plugin will solve my problem. It does what I need done. But wait. Maybe I should buy this new gallery plugin instead.
The odds of this happening are slim. Very slim.
Make Sure Your Visitor is Seeing the Right Ad
This comes back to what I have talked about a lot on this blog, conditional logic.
Take this example. Let’s say you are a photographer. You specialize in travel, landscape and wildlife photography. You recently published a book on How to Photograph Wildlife in Action. Or maybe you are an affiliate of a course that teaches you how to take photos of wildlife. The best solution here is that whenever you are writing a post about wildlife, then the ad for the book or course should show up. It relates to the interest of the reader and just makes the most sense.

If we were to take that same scenario, this is what we would do in the Advanced Ads. We would have it show only in the category Wildlife.

And the same goes here. You would just choose the one category to display the ad in.
It’s really that simple. Of course, depending on your categories and other factors, you may need to add more conditions, but you get the idea.
There will be some cases where you might want to go more generic on this. Again, that depends on your strategy. For example, in the same scenario, as I mentioned above, the photographer may choose to offer an ad for a more general photography course, which still relates to what people are consuming on the blog, it’s just a bit more general.
Whatever the case, if you are doing ads, make sure they complement your reader’s experience, not distract from it.
